Creating Mood boards to Inspire Your Creative Projects

I was first introduced to the concept of mood boards properly during my time at college, and since then, they’ve become an essential part of my creative process. Mood boards, also known as inspiration boards or vibe boards, all serve the same purpose: they help gather ideas and create a cohesive feeling, style, or energy for a project.
I love using photography, textures, nature, and all sorts of elements when making mine. I even made one for our wedding! They keep me grounded and focused, helping to prevent me from darting off after the next beautiful thing that catches my eye (what I like to call ‘Shiny Object Syndrome’—ha!).
Beyond creative projects, I also use vision boards for life intentions. These are a little different to mood boards (I wrote about this in my previous blog, which is linked at the end of this blog). There’s something truly powerful about having physical images that represent your dreams. Seeing them daily helps keep your intentions clear and your motivation strong.

Ways You Can Use a Mood Board
Mood boards can be used for so many things, including:
Designing a space in your home
Planning a wedding or birthday party
Developing an art collection
Inspiring a new creative project
For example, if you’re a ceramicist, you might create a board inspired by autumn leaves, gathering images of warm earthy tones, organic textures, and natural shapes to guide your collection and create a cohesive look. Or, you are getting married and this season inspires your colours, decor and flowers.
Digital vs. Physical Mood Boards
Pinterest is a fantastic tool for collecting images and ideas digitally, I use it regularly. But personally, I adore the tactile experience of creating a physical board. It helps me connect more deeply with the energy of how I want something to feel. There’s something really special about arranging materials, textures, and colours by hand, letting your intuition lead the way.
